DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Swamp Heritage Festival celebrates 50 years of Big Cypress National Preserve and honors the generations that protected this area before it became a national preserve. The theme of this year’s festival is to ‘Celebrate Cypress’ through cultural demonstrations\, storytelling\, and hands-on activities that highlight the preserve’s unique history and significance. Visitors will learn about the past through engaging speakers\, music\, traditional arts\, and exhibits showcasing the area’s plants\, animals\, and technology. Activities like archery\, swamp buggy rides\, and displays on airboats and Miccosukee culture will also be featured. \nThis year\, the Miccosukee Tribe has played a key role in the festival\, with their logo and tribal members featured in promotional materials. The event\, held on December 7th from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm\, will include remarks from Preserve Superintendent Tom Forsyth\, photographer Clyde Butcher\, and Miccosukee Tribe Chairman Cypress Talbert. Guests can enjoy traditional food\, browse local artist booths\, and attend demonstrations on boat carving\, fly-tying\, and cattleman whip cracking. Featured speakers include Randy Noles\, Dallas Townsend\, and William J. ‘Popeye’ Osceola.

With kid’s activities\, swamp buggies\, airboats and more\, there are opportunities for the whole family to learn and get involved!\n\nThe goal of this festival is to shine a spotlight upon the inhabitants of early south Florida\, whose rugged strength and pioneering spirit contributed to the shaping of today’s unique and diverse culture. Through living history demonstrations\, informative presentations\, and exhibits everyone can learn what daily life was like in such a remote\, and at times\, inhospitable place. It is these unique chapters in American history that add to the rich and colorful tableau that comprises our shared past and present. In 2023\, we are bringing back this perfect example of collaboration and community in order to share the knowledge and cultures of the past.
