SUMMARY:Exhibit Open | Growing Obsession: The Enchanting Story of Orchids in the Everglades
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Dates: February 24\, 2026 – June 20\, 2026\nThe Sunshine State is home to over one hundred different species of orchids. More than half of these are found is South Florida\, with many of the rarest and most obscure specimens found only deep in the wild landscape of the Everglades. \nThis exhibit explores the exotic beauty of these often otherworldly florae as well as their role in some of the more significant and occasionally notorious chapters of our region’s history. The passion these unique plants inspire—sometimes bordering on mania—has been compared to the “gold fever” experienced by treasure hunters. Botanical researchers and horticultural enthusiasts from around the world make obligatory pilgrimages to the nearby Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park—known as the Orchid Capital of North America due to its rich concentration of almost fifty different flowering plants in the Orchidaceae family\, including the ever-elusive Ghost Orchid. \nCombining breathtaking imagery\, historical accounts\, and the engaging stories of local personalities inextricably linked to these blossoming beauties and the madness they occasionally inspire\, Growing Obsession gives each visitor a glimpse of the haunting beauty and elemental magic that can sometimes be found in the Everglades and its extraordinary flora.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Talk at the Museum of the Everglades
DESCRIPTION:The Third Thursday Talks hosted by the Museum of the Everglades are geared towards teaching and preserving the history of the area. \nDecember 18 – Dignitaries on the Dais\nOn December 6th\, 1947\, President Harry Truman arrived at the Everglades City airport and addressed an audience assembled on bleachers borrowed from the Ringling Brothers Circus in Sarasota. The occasion was the dedication of Everglades National Park. \nWhile the enabling legislation to create the Park had been enacted in 1924 under Franklin Roosevelt\, it had taken more than a decade for the seemingly endless list of tasks from land acquisition to the writing of policies to be completed for what would be just the sixth National Park. It was an auspicious event — but not one without controversy\, both internal and external. \nThe dignitaries who joined the President on the dais — adorned with palm fronds and decorated with open crates of oranges — came from all walks of life: politics\, journalism\, military\, horticulture\, conservation\, religion\, and more. Leaders of the Seminole Tribe rubbed elbows with author Marjory Stoneman Douglas and orchid collector turner “Daddy of the Park” Ernest F. Coe. \nMuseum Manager Thomas Lockyear will share the stories of the VIPs in attendance\, some of whom addressed the audience\, others who we singled out for their contributions to the project and still more who might have gone unnoticed but were nonetheless crucial components in the thirteen-year effort to preserve the country’s largest wetland — the only Everglades in the world. \nGet all the details at colliermuseums.com.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Talk at the Museum of the Everglades
DESCRIPTION:The Third Thursday Talks hosted by the Museum of the Everglades are geared towards teaching and preserving the history of the area. \nNovember 20 – Defending the Sacred\nIn observance of Native American Heritage Month\, we celebrate the rich cultures of the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes and their continuing stewardship of the biologically diverse and environmentally sensitive region known as the Everglades. In this talk given by renowned environmental educator and member of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians\, Betty Osceola\, guests will learn firsthand about the indigenous population’s spiritual connection to the land — the home of their ancestors — and their determination to honor\, protect\, and defend it as sacred ground. Betty Osceola was the recipient of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Defender of the Everglades award in 2024. She is also a tribal judge\, has appeared in numerous documentary films and television shows (including the Disney feature “Path of the Panther” and Jeff Corwin’s “Wildlife Nation”) and continues to work tirelessly to advocate for the Everglades. \nGet all the details at colliermuseums.com.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Talk at the Museum of the Everglades
DESCRIPTION:The Third Thursday Talks hosted by the Museum of the Everglades are geared towards teaching and preserving the history of the area. \nOctober 16 -Pathways to Partnership: Listening\, Learning\, and Working Together\nIn this companion lecture to Sharing the Path\, Museum Manager Thomas Lockyear will explore the ways in which partnerships with our region’s indigenous people have shaped our understanding of and relationship with what has been described as “one of the harshest environments on earth” — both historically and in present day. \nMr. Lockyear will also discuss the evolution of the exhibit as well as the Museum’s 2023 collaboration with the Miccosukee Tribe on the We Are Still Here exhibit that shared their history from their own perspective. The talk will also include stories of successful historic partnerships and other lessons from the past as well as our blueprint to build better strategies for the future based on traditional indigenous knowledge. \nGet all the details at colliermuseums.com.

SUMMARY:Miccosukee Day/Opening Reception for Sharing the Path
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 13th – the nationally celebrated holiday of Indigenous People’s Day – Museum of the Everglades will open of our new “Sharing the Path” exhibit. Normally closed on Mondays\, we saw this day as an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to sharing the history and culture of South Florida’s Native peoples.\n\nIn light of the greater Everglades community’s long history of learning from\, working together with and welcoming this region’s native residents\, it seems only fitting to celebrate those partnerships on this day.\n\nJoin us as we respectfully recognize the continuing contributions of the Miccosukee and Seminole people to the preservation of the Everglades\, acknowledge their historical presence in our region and express gratitude for the knowledge and wisdom they have shared with us. Enjoy and engage with our new exhibit and explore the possibilities for a better future offered by integrating traditional indigenous knowledge.

SUMMARY:The Annual Grapefruit Gala
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the parking lot at Museum of the Everglades for our annual whimsical country dance. Enjoy live music\, tasty finger foods\, and complimentary wine along with fresh local citrus as we celebrate the birthday of county founder Barron Gift Collier. Collier’s 1921 purchase of a grapefruit grove at Deep Lake ultimately shifted the local economy toward tourism and led to the creation of our county. That’s why we say\, “It all started with grapefruit.” Stop by and raise a toast to our founder. No formal attire required at this gala. Just bring a chair and don’t forget your dancing shoes.
