Visit Everglades City and the Ten Thousand Islands of Southwest Florida, the Everglades

Did You Know We Made History?

Everglades City

In Everglades City, history was made in a way no one expected when the world’s largest grilled cheese sandwich was cooked up during the First Annual Everglades Cheese and (Florida) Cracker Festival in 1999.

The colossal sandwich, which was crafted using 100 pounds of Cabot’s award-winning sharp cheddar, measured an impressive five by ten feet square. It was cooked over 300 pounds of charcoal on a specially fabricated steel grill. The entire sandwich and grill setup weighed nearly three-quarters of a ton, and, to turn it over, the help of two forklift trucks was required.

The festival, which was free to all, included a day full of games, competitions, and fun, celebrating Everglades City’s recognition as Florida’s Outstanding Rural Community. With many of the day’s events benefiting the Museum of the Everglades, the festival brought together locals and visitors to celebrate rural life with food, fun, and a bit of history-making action.
