Bear Island is a unique find for any thrill seeker. It’s the only backcountry unit that allows street-legal 4-Wheel Drive vehicles, ATVs and swamp buggies to access its off-road trails.

It also includes 3 campgrounds – the Bear Island Campground, which is accessible to all vehicles, and Pink Jeep and Gator Head, which can only be reached by off-road vehicles, bikers or hikers.

To access the backcountry, you’ll need free permits available at various locations. Access points are gated, necessitating permits or a separate entrance for hikers and bikers.

Bear Island doesn’t feature hiker-exclusive trails; all paths are open to vehicles, hikers, and bikers.

With the exception of hunting dogs during the hunting season, pets are not allowed.

Are dogs allowed off leash in the park?

No. Dogs must always be kept on a leash when visiting Everglades National Park and surrounding park lands.

In most areas, dogs are not allowed on trails, boardwalks, or backcountry routes at all, even on a leash. Where pets are permitted (such as certain roadside or developed areas), they must be:

On a leash no longer than 6 feet
Under control at all times
Kept out of wildlife areas and water

These rules are in place to protect:

Sensitive wildlife (including birds, reptiles, and mammals)
Fragile ecosystems
Your dog’s safety (alligators, snakes, and heat are real risks here)
