This month’s Third Thursday Talk is “Faith on the Frontier: A Brief History of Churches in the Everglades Area.” It’s presented by Museum Assistant Mathew Anderson, who also serves as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Everglades City.

Anderson looks at how the area’s churches got their start. Many of them date back to the turn of the last century. In those early days, raising a small chapel often came before building a school.

He’ll also share some local history along the way. The museum itself once hosted Catholic masses. And county founder Barron Gift Collier made sure people of every faith were always welcome to worship in Everglades City.

The Third Thursday Talks at the Museum of the Everglades are geared toward teaching and preserving the history of the area.
