Visit Everglades City and the Ten Thousand Islands of Southwest Florida, the Everglades

It’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season

Sea turtle nesting season has begun, and the FWC urges 10,000 Islands residents and visitors to help protect these threatened and endangered species.

How You Can Help:

  • Clear the way at the end of the day: Female sea turtles expend immense energy crawling onto the beach to lay their eggs in safe locations. Beach debris, holes in the sand, and unattended gear can obstruct their path and prevent hatchlings from making it safely to the ocean.

  • Lights out for turtles: Artificial lights can disorient both nesting turtles and hatchlings, leading them away from the ocean.

  • Observe from a distance: Getting too close to nesting turtles can cause them to abandon their efforts. Remain at least 50 feet away. Remember, it is illegal to disturb or harm nesting sea turtles, their nests, or hatchlings

Nesting season on the Gulf Coast continues through the summer, so now is the time to take precautions. More Info: MyFWC.com/SeaTurtle.
