Goodland
by Denise Wauters
If you travel SR 92 between Goodland and Marco Island, plan a little extra time for the next several months. The Stan Gober Memorial Bridge is undergoing a major rehabilitation project, and lane closures are already underway.
Collier County began mobilizing for the project earlier this month. As of March 23, crews are moving into the bridge deck repair phase, which will require intermittent lane closures — both overnight and during daytime hours — continuing through this summer.
The bridge is currently operating as a single lane controlled by traffic signals at each end, allowing one direction of traffic at a time. The speed limit through the construction zone has been reduced to 35 mph. Fines for speeding are doubled in active work zones when workers are present.
What Is Being Repaired
The project covers structural repairs to the bridge deck, columns, and foundation. Crews are also addressing scour issues — erosion around the base of the bridge — with environmental improvements designed to prevent further damage.
Work is happening above and below the bridge at the same time. Small boats and barges are in use for underwater work, which includes installing cathodic protection to slow corrosion, repairing cracks and delamination, and fixing the fender system. Boaters passing through the area should watch for equipment and personnel.
A Little History
The bridge was built in 1975 and was long known locally as the Goodland Bridge. It was renamed the Stan Gober Memorial Bridge in 2012 to honor Stan Gober, who owned and operated Stan’s Idle Hour restaurant in Goodland for many years.
What Drivers Should Expect
Deck repair work is expected to be completed by summer 2026. The full rehabilitation project is anticipated to wrap up in spring 2027.
Collier County’s contractor will adjust signal timing throughout the project to help minimize delays, but drivers heading to or from Marco Island and Goodland should allow extra time, especially during peak hours. If your trip doesn’t require crossing the bridge, taking an alternate route is a good idea while work is active.
