Visit Everglades City and the Ten Thousand Islands of Southwest Florida, the Everglades

New Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center

Everglades City

by Denise Wauters

Everglades National Park Adventures has moved its operations into the new Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center in Everglades City. This is the group that runs the boat tours, kayak rentals, and now bike rentals inside the park.

The new visitor center, marina, kayak building, and parking area are all now complete. This has been a long time coming after the damage from Hurricane Irma back in 2017, and it really changes how this area functions for visitors.

The new building is named after Marjory Stoneman Douglas, whose work helped bring national attention to protecting the Everglades.

One of the biggest changes is where the boat tours leave from. The 90-minute pontoon tours through the Ten Thousand Islands had been running out of a temporary spot north of the park. Those tours are now leaving directly from the new marina at the visitor center.

These tours head out into the Ten Thousand Islands, with guides sharing information about the area’s wildlife and history.

Kayak rentals and guided trips into Chokoloskee Bay are also now based out of the new building. They offer everything from basic recreational kayaks to fishing setups and backcountry gear.

They’re also planning to add a shuttle service this fall for paddlers moving between this area and Flamingo along the Wilderness Waterway.

Another new addition here is bike rentals. You can take bikes outside the park and ride over to Chokoloskee Island or into Everglades City.

The boat tours are open to all ages and are wheelchair accessible. Kayaks and bikes are generally recommended for ages six and up.

The visitor center is located at 815 Oyster Bar Lane and is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
