Nate’s Legacy Reels in Local Support

In memory of Nate Edwards, the Annual Nate Edwards Fishing Tournament has become a beacon of generosity and community spirit. Nate Edwards lost his
life in a tragic accident on October 1st, 2021, at just 24 years old. During his brief but impactful life, Nate was known for his generosity, kindness, and unwavering commitment to helping others. His passion for fishing and his love for his community inspired the creation of this tournament, which first took place in 2022.

The Nate Edwards Fishing Tournament was established not only to honor Nate’s memory but also to continue his legacy of giving back. Since its inception, the tournament has raised and donated an impressive $165,000 to various charities and causes.

These donations have funded trade and academic scholarships, supported individuals with Autism and special needs, and provided aid to those with Down Syndrome and lifelong illnesses, among other noble causes.

Nate’s family, including Dane, Sandy, and Ben Edwards, shared their thoughts: “Nate was a son, brother, uncle, best friend, and a friend to so many. He was mechanically inclined from a young age, fixing small engines and eventually building his first car motor at 16. Nate was always ready to lend a hand, whether to a friend in need or a stranger on the street. His best days were spent on the water with family and friends, fishing and sharing stories. The tournament reflects his love for fishing and his commitment to helping others.”

The tournament also supports several local organizations, including:

  • Everglades City School
The Nate Edwards Scholarship Fund, established in 2022, provides graduating students with the opportunity to attend trade or captain schools, fostering new skills and future success. Funds are also allocated to other school programs as needed.

  • LARC
LARC (Lee Association for Remarkable Citizens) empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through various programs and services, promoting independence and employment success.

  • Autism Services of Florida
Dedicated to providing high-quality care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, this organization offers a range of services, including speech, occupational, and physical therapy, and support for families.

  • Uyenos Foundation
Supports scholarships for individuals with Autism and recently provided $18,000 for education and sensory equipment.

  • GiGi’s Playhouse Ft. Myers
Focused on acceptance and support for individuals with Down Syndrome, GiGi’s Playhouse offers free educational, therapeutic, and career development programs.

  • East Lee County High School
Provides funds for academic programs, allowing seniors to graduate into their chosen trades. The school’s welding program has also contributed metal fish pieces to the tournament’s raffles and auctions.

In its second year, the tournament achieved remarkable success, raising an unbelievable $100,000 for various charities.

In the 2023 Nate Edwards Fishing Tournament, DOBBS EQUIPMENT claimed first place with a 75.5-inch catch, winning $3,537.00. The largest snook was 36 inches, the largest redfish was 30 inches, and the largest trout measured 21 inches.
