Everglades City
by Denise Wauters
“It all started with grapefruit” isn’t just a saying — it’s a piece of local history worth celebrating.
On Saturday, March 21, 2026, the Grapefruit Gathering & Art Fair returns to the Museum of the Everglades, bringing together history, agriculture, art, and classic Everglades fun in one lively community celebration.
This annual event commemorates the birthday of county founder Barron Gift Collier and his pivotal 1921 purchase of a grapefruit grove at Deep Lake. That investment helped shift the local economy toward tourism and ultimately led to the creation of Collier County in 1923.
This year, the celebration plants new seeds.
The Grapefruit Gathering & Art Fair expands the tradition with an invitational art fair and fruit tree sale, highlighting the region’s agricultural roots while keeping the elements everyone loves — live music, food, and a full day of family-friendly fun.
This is also where the beloved laundry cart races take place, adding a uniquely Everglades twist that keeps crowds coming back year after year.
History lovers, art fans, and anyone looking for a fun reason to spend a Saturday in Everglades City will feel right at home. The event captures the spirit of the place in the most Everglades way possible.
