Everglades City
by Patty Huff
On January 11, the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation, Inc., in conjunction with the Ted Smallwood’s Store, Inc., hosted the White Pelican Festival to raise funds for our two non-profit organizations. We would like to thank Raiford Starke, Sara McCullough, James Hawkins, John Bois, Rita Youngman, and Pat Barmore for providing the music for our fun-filled festival held at the Smallwood Store in Chokoloskee.
Over 100 attendees enjoyed fry bread and Native American tacos, as well as smoked mullet and smoked fish dip in addition to wonderful desserts, including Lynn’s family recipe for homemade Key Lime Pie and Brownies. Art and books were available for purchase, and the highlight was enjoying the boat tour out to see the beautiful white pelicans that filled the beach.
A special thank you to the Smallwood Store staff and our ESHP volunteers Hydie Friend, Don Kim with his daughter Anya, Patty Huff, and Betsy Roth. It was a great way to spend the day in the Everglades!
