Visit Everglades City and the Ten Thousand Islands of Southwest Florida, the Everglades

Winter Bite

by Captain Mike Merritt

As I write this from my lodge in the Amazon and it is 90 degrees during the day, I think of last December when we had some warm weather in Everglades. The Permit came inshore and were feeding up close to the Islands. There was some really calm days that allowed us to sight cast these fish when they showed up and it was a blast! Just hoping we get that opportunity again this year.

What we can definitely count on is the winter species that migrate in like the Sheepshead, Black Drum, even Mackerel, Trout, and Bluefish. We are already catching these guys and this should continue all winter.

The back country fishing should pick up with Snook going into warmer waters. Redfish will also be traveling up the rivers into back country waters. A few years back we really had a strong Redfish bite in the rivers so I am always hopeful for this to repeat. Every year brings a slightly different variation on when and where the fish will be, so we have to figure it out. But, as I tell the real fishermen, that is part of the fun. As fishing guides we have already done the hunting part, so our clients can catch fish. But sometimes things don’t go as planned so you go hunting all over again!

Right now if you just want to catch enough for a fish fry then grab some shrimp at one of our local bait shops and put one under a popping cork with a small weight above the hook. About 24” of line under the cork, or less depending on water depth, and fish the flats, points, edges of the Islands, or rivers. You will find something happening and always catch something. Working a 1/4oz. jig head rigged with a plastic tail will also produce plenty of action in the same areas. Tip it with a small piece of shrimp to add to the appeal and you can’t go wrong.

Enjoy the variety as this is the time of year when it is the greatest. You might catch a dozen or more different species. It’s also a great time to take kids fishing as the Trout offer lots of fun and a great fish fry.

Whatever you decide it can be a real pleasant time to fish as long as the temperature doesn’t drop too low. If it does, the the fishing will get tougher until the fish adjust. Good luck fishing and enjoy your family and friends!
