Boating Safety in the Ten Thousand Islands

Ten Thousand Islands

by Denise Wauters

We’re heading into that time of year again.

More boats on the water, more visitors learning their way around, and more days where the weather looks calm — until it isn’t. In the Ten Thousand Islands, it doesn’t take much for a simple trip to turn into a long one.

This is also when National Safe Boating Week (May 16–22) rolls around. Good timing, because most of the issues we see out here come down to the small things.
Out here, things change fast. Tides shift, channels move, and what worked last month might not work today. Add in summer weather building over the Gulf, and a short trip can turn into more than you planned. Once you’re out in the islands, help isn’t close by — which is why the basics matter.

Most issues aren’t big. They’re life jackets not being worn, quick trips that run long, or gear that worked last time but doesn’t now. We’ve all seen it.

This week is a good excuse to slow down for a minute before heading out. Take a look at your gear. Make sure what you expect to work actually does. Let someone know your plan, even if it feels routine. And if you’re heading into backcountry you don’t know well, check our local Fishing Report — it’s a good read on current conditions in the Ten Thousand Islands.

Local Coast Guard Auxiliary crews are offering free vessel safety checks in the area this week — an easy way to catch small issues before you head out. If you’ve been meaning to take a safety course, they run those too.
