Bank of Everglades Building Project Update for May

Everglades City

by Everglades Society for Historic Preservation

The Bank of Everglades Building looks a little different every time you drive past it lately, and there’s plenty to show for the work being done.

The exterior staircase is now complete, along with the second-floor balcony. Around the back of the building, you can see openings for the three French doors that will eventually serve as access points to the community conference room, the two classrooms, and the historical library.

Over the next few weeks, watch for the temporary railings on the staircase and balcony to get a coat of blue paint, and the building itself to be painted white. Permanent metal railings are planned for installation during the next phase of the project.

Once finished, the Bank of Everglades Building will house the Everglades Area Welcome Center, an arts and cultural hub, and the Trail Town Headquarters — three uses that will give the building a real role in the community again.

The Everglades Society for Historic Preservation continues to seek both private and county funding to complete the rehabilitation. The hope is that someone — an individual, a business, or an organization — will want to be part of preserving one of Barron Gift Collier’s most iconic structures.
