Everglades City
by Denise Wauters
After years of challenges, Everglades City railroad depot owner Bill Odrey is excited to announce progress on the restoration of the historic 1928 building. Odrey, who has owned the depot through his business, Everglades Adventure Center LLC, for nearly a decade, recently shared a hopeful message with the community: “All is getting better.”
While navigating the complex permitting process and addressing substantial repair needs, Odrey has made strides toward the depot’s future. Although Collier County previously deemed the building unsafe and required a full restoration, recent developments have brought new optimism. On November 19, 2024, the Everglades City Code Enforcement Board granted Odrey 180 days to bring the building into compliance, with roof repairs being the top priority. This crucial step is a sign of positive movement, as Odrey works closely with attorney Patrick Neale to address the county’s review comments and ensure compliance.
The depot holds a cherished place in Everglades City’s history. Opened in 1928, it served as a key passenger and freight hub until 1956 before being repurposed for various businesses, including the Old Station Restaurant and Everglades Seafood Depot. While the building has faced setbacks in recent years, including hurricane damage and permit violations, Odrey seems determined to bring it back to life.
We are eager to see this historic gem restored, and the next several months will be pivotal in making that vision a reality.
