Everglades City

The Bank of Everglades restoration is making great progress! ESHP is so happy that the rehabilitation is moving along on schedule and would like to thank our architect, REG, and Classic Carpentry for their dedication and personal interest in this project. These photos highlight key stages of the work as this historic landmark is brought back to life.

First floor restoration in progress – After removing the wainscoting (which will be cleaned up and reinstalled) and plastered walls, the structural integrity of the Bank of Everglades is clear. Built in 1927 with high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship, the building remains remarkably sound.

Removing the non-historic addition – This demolition clears the way for restoring the original Bank of Everglades building. The historic structure remains intact as part of the preservation effort.

Planning the restoration – Architect Aleli de la Vega, Board Member Hydie Friend, and contractor John Brechel review the rehabilitation plans for the historic Bank of Everglades, ensuring every detail preserves its rich history.

Uncovering the past – As the second-floor walls were removed, the original back window of the Bank of Everglades was revealed. This window had been hidden since 1956 when the rear addition was built, offering a glimpse into the building’s original design.

Exposing the vault’s foundation – Removing the floor of the rear section of the building uncovered how an additional structural wall was poured next to the original foundation of the bank vault, a key feature of this historic building
