Everglades City
Everglades Society for Historic Preservation (ESHP) and local business owners, are ensuring that an important piece of the area’s past is preserved for future generations.
Built in 1923, the original jailhouse was a modest wooden structure situated on the southwest corner of the Circle. Despite its simplicity, it held a few dozen inmates on the first floor, while the sheriff and his family lived in quarters above. Imagine the challenges faced by Sheriff William Riley “W.R.” Maynard’s wife, who resided in close proximity to the prisoners—possibly even preparing meals for them!

The old jail, visible in the center background, stands as a landmark in this bird’s-eye view of Everglades City, photographed on September 18, 1926, after the hurricane.
The Everglades Society for Historic Preservation would like to thank Captain Morgan’s Seafood Grill owners Morgan and Magy Marcos, along with their son Andres, for contributing to this project and to Board member Don Kim for installing this historic sign.
When you visit Captain Morgan’s Seafood Grill and the other historic sites around the Circle, and around town, take a moment to appreciate and to reflect on the fascinating stories that have shaped Everglades City into what it is today.
