Update From City Hall

Everglades City

by Michael McComas
Everglades City Council

On Tuesday February 18th City Council held a workshop to get the citizen’s input on the proposed plans for the replacement of the Community Center above McLeod Park. McFarland Johnson, our Public, Private partner presented plans for the members who attended to review and comment upon.

The proposed plans first indicated three separate buildings with separate functions in each including a Multi purpose room with a computer room, a meeting room with conference room and offices and an athletic room. The meeting was well attended with a large contingent of students who had valuable input into the uses and needs of the facility.

After much discussion the representatives of McFarland were asked to present us with plans for two rooms including an enhanced athletic room with full court basketball capability including manager offices and storage. They will return with updated plans for continued community review and input.

The Mayor reminded the attendees that the funds for this project were currently in the Ways and Means committee of the US House of Representatives after being proposed by Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.

There ensued a short discussion about opening McLeod Park for Public usage and the Mayor explained that it was available to any adult willing to take responsibility for the operation and maintenance much as Councilperson Diana Valdes does currently on Friday nights for local youth.

Code Enforcement Board meeting, the Board was lacking a quorum and consequently could not legally meet.
